Introduction
By the time Gwendolyn Hooks was 15, she had lived in Naples, Italy and four different states, mostly on Air Force Bases. Her dad taught her how to read maps during their family Sunday drives. She enjoys reading maps and traveling. Gwendolyn loves meeting people and learning about other cultures and countries. She has visited Canada, England, and Belgium. She dreams of spending a summer in Bruges, Belgium, and living in a bed and breakfast while writing her heart book.
Background
Gwendolyn along with her two sisters and two brothers grew up as a reader. She read everything: cereal boxes, telephone books, encyclopedias, and all kinds of library books. Her favorites were mysteries from Nancy Drew to the Hardy Boys and any of Phyllis A. Whitney’s mysteries. Gwendolyn said, “I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when I decided to write a mystery. But they sure are harder to write than read.”
Books
Gwendolyn is the author of several books, both fiction and nonfiction. She started writing nonfiction because she heard nonfiction was easier to sell. Not hers. Her first sales were three fiction easy readers published by Bebop Books, Scholastic, and Children’s Press. After selling magazine articles to Highlights and JAKES, she tried her hand at nonfiction again and sold three science books to Rourke Publishing. School Library Journal said, “This series has stunning photos, fascinating facts, and intriguing examples.”
Currently, Gwendolyn is writing an easy reader series, a mystery chapter book, and many more nonfiction books. “Everything fascinates me. I see nonfiction book ideas all around me.”
Speaking
Gwendolyn has been a keynote speaker for Staff Development for Educators (SDE) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She has also presented at EnclycloMedia, Oklahoma Education Association, Red Dirt Book Festival, Arkansas Association of School Librarians, and the American Library Association's "Nonfiction Book Blast." She loves sharing her knowledge with others, especially children. Gwendolyn has taught creative writing in the Oklahoma City Arts Council's 'After School Program', and has done writing workshops and author visits throughout the U.S.
